We resume our article on the basics of twenty-one. In Part 1 we covered the basis of the game, taking another card, standing and how to double down. In part 2 we will talk about splitting, surrendering and insurance.

Split: if a gambler is dealt 2 cards of the same amount (two 8’s for instance) she may split them to make 2 different hands. If you choose to divide your hand you’ll need to make a new wager equivalent to the initial bet.

Surrender: A few casinos will permit players to surrender the cards they have been given along with half of the original bet they made before the croupier looking at his hand. As a rule it’s important to ask the croupier for clarification on the chemin de fer table game rules or look at the rules area on the internet betting house you are playing on.

Insurance: When the croupiers face up card is an Ace individuals have the chance to take out insurance. You will place half of the original wager before the dealer checks his cards; if the dealer has chemin de fer you will come away with a win on the insurance wager but still lose the original amount. Sadly if the dealer does not have black jack the gambler loses the insurance. It’s a risk but one that is absolutely worth it, if used as part of a clever plan.

Once a player has stayed or busted by exceeding twenty-one the croupier will reveal his or her cards and will go on to deal themselves cards until 1 of the following events has happened: if he has reached seventeen, a croupier will not usually take another card because of the likelihood of going bust, if he has drawn twenty-one or if he has gone bust.
